Last night I learned that just because you have 2electric lanterns - both of which were fully charged 1.5years ago - it does not mean that said lanterns will have any remaining juice when your power dies. Further, while their manual charge functions are indeed useful, you will need to crank them almost continuously to get any sustained luminance.
Must remember to charge more often.
We have a propane lantern and a couple very small tanks. I'm assuming those have a longer shelf life and would still light. Having that said, Reston rarely loses power (knock on laminated engineered composite wood).

ReplyDeleteFranklin - There's something to be said about underground power! The most bothersome thing about last night, actually, was that the peeps on the other side of the street had power. GRR. Though it worked to my advantage as I was able to pilfer unsecured internet.
ReplyDeleteThere's something lovely about the contrasting nuances of being thrown into the dark ages without power, and still able to use a laptop and nearby wireless internet. You were truly the modern day version of sitting by the candlelight.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's a bit overkill but we have our wireless router on backup battery as well as the DVR. Gotta make sure the shows keep recording!
